Policy and peacebuilding

Our research strengthens diplomacy and conflict resolution.

Australia is in one of the most dynamic geopolitical environments in the world. We are revealing the processes used by actors who spread disinformation to undermine democratic processes. Through our research, the University of Melbourne advances peacebuilding and conflict prevention.

We are supporting Australia to take on the challenges of increasing geopolitical uncertainty.

Peacebuilding and conflict prevention

We advance peacebuilding and conflict prevention in the Indo-Pacific region. Our expertise includes preventive diplomacy and dialogue, strategic policy development and conflict analysis. We also conduct research in mediation and negotiation, and international conflict resolution theory and practice. Our researchers develop and deliver training in these capability areas. We also evaluate and review government programs.

Peacebuilding practice innovations

The University of Melbourne is examining what is working in conflict transformation efforts in collaboration with key First Nations mediators in Australia, as well as Southeast Asian and Pacific peacebuilding organisations. We achieve this through the collaborative investigation of partner experiences in Myanmar, the Philippines, Solomon Islands, Bougainville, Papua New Guinea and Central and Northern Australia.

Information and influence

Disinformation can undermine our democratic processes. The University of Melbourne’s multidisciplinary research reveals the processes used by actors who spread disinformation. We evaluate its impact on our communities. We help agencies, groups and individuals identify misinformation, recognise the risks, and effectively respond to subversive information threats. We have expertise from political and behavioural science to computing and information systems.
