From science to strategy:

For Master of Management student Sara Argyrou, a SCOUT internship with Australian MedTech company 4DMedical was the perfect opportunity to combine her background in neuroscience with her growing interest in business, technology and healthcare innovation.

Sara joined a multidisciplinary team of students from engineering, biotechnology, public health and business to develop a commercialisation strategy for an AI-enabled diagnostic tool for chronic lung diseases. Together, they explored the current diagnostic pathway, analysed competitors and engaged with healthcare industry leaders to understand how new technologies can be successfully adopted in clinical settings.

"I was interested in this internship because it sat at the intersection of healthcare, technology and business," Sara said. "The opportunity to contribute to a project with real clinical and commercial impact was a major reason I wanted to be involved."

Working on a real industry challenge gave Sara valuable insight into what it takes to bring healthcare innovation to market.

"The most valuable learning I took away from the internship was understanding the barriers that can affect clinical adoption of new medical technologies," she said. "I learnt that even when a technology has strong clinical potential, adoption depends on much more than the product itself."

The experience also reinforced the value of working in a multidisciplinary team.

"Our team included students from engineering, biotechnology, public health and business, which meant we each approached the project through a different lens," Sara said. "By combining our different perspectives, we were able to develop more practical recommendations for 4DMedical."

Beyond building technical and strategic skills, the internship helped shape Sara's career aspirations.

"As I am interested in pursuing management consulting, this experience was especially valuable because it gave me exposure to the type of problem-solving, teamwork and client-focused thinking that I hope to use in my future career," she said.

Reflecting on her SCOUT experience, Sara encourages other students to step outside their comfort zone and embrace the opportunity.

"I would definitely encourage students to apply for an internship through the SCOUT program," she said. "You're not just completing an academic exercise – you're contributing to work that can have a real impact. My advice would be to be curious, ask questions and make the most of the opportunity. It's an experience that helps you grow professionally, meet inspiring people and realise that your ideas can make a real contribution."
