The University of Melbourne is proud to announce a partnership with the Berlin University Alliance and the establishment of funding scheme to boost joint research activities.

University of Melbourne Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Jim McCluskey today joined the representatives from the Alliance to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on joint research projects, promote and support joint PhD opportunities, and foster the exchange of academic and professional staff.

The Alliance is comprised of four research institutions: Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, and Charité - Universitätsmedizin and aims to unlock the potential of research collaboration.

The University and the Alliance have committed $A1.6 million over two years towards a joint research seed funding initiative.

Professor McCluskey said the MoU will strengthen the University’s ties with four leading institutions in Berlin.

“We are excited with the opportunities this partnership with the Berlin University Alliance will bring to our institution, which will allow our research to progress to even greater heights,” Professor McCluskey said.

“This seed funding program represents a milestone in our relationship with the Berlin’s top universities that will foster greater levels of collaboration on challenges that require a global perspective and leadership.”

“In times of nationalism and unilateralism, the BUA-Melbourne Alliance gives the right answer: cooperate,” Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin representative Dr Magnus Rüde said.

Technische Universität Berlin Vice President Professor Angela Ittel and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin Vice President for Research Professor Peter Frensch said that the partnerships represent a wonderful opportunity for all scientists in Berlin.

“We are excited about the cooperation between two great cities and two vibrant research areas, getting even better by working together,” Freie Universität Berlin Vice-President Professor Verena Blechinger-Talcott said.

Submissions to the joint seed funding Call for Proposals, open to all research disciplines, can be made via the Berlin University Alliance website and close 15 April 2019. Successful applications will be able to commence their work from June 2019 onward.
