Partnership in Research Indonesia and Melbourne (PRIME)

PRIME facilitates research and academic collaboration in health, social sciences, and engineering, with the goal of addressing global challenges.

The Partnership in Research Indonesia and Melbourne is a milestone cooperative initiative between the University of Melbourne, Indonesia’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemendikbudristekdikti), and leading Indonesian universities.

Established in 2021, PRIME facilitates research and academic collaboration in health, social sciences, and engineering, with the goal of addressing global challenges confronting the world today. PRIME uses a portfolio model to group projects in themes. The four project portfolios are:

  • Bioengineering and biomaterial for human good health and wellbeing
  • Water resources and wastewater resources recovery
  • Cleaner energy and energy efficient system and products
  • Sustainable, smart, resilient, and liveable cities.

Leading research in health, social sciences and engineering

Through PRIME Health, the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences is partnering with the University of Indonesia, Gadjah Mada University and the University of Airlangga to deliver research programs in primary health care, health systems, infectious diseases and adolescent health. PRIME is enhancing interdisciplinary research and training throughout Indonesia and establishes the University of Melbourne as a leading institute for research capacity development in Indonesia.

PRIME Social Sciences is a collaboration between the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Arts and the University of Indonesia, Gadjah Mada University and the University of Airlangga. A comparative project is underway that explores government responses to COVID-19 in Indonesia and resilience in civil society, resulting in publications of importance to Indonesia, Australia and the region.

PRIME Engineering is the latest program of research to be approved involving a collaboration between the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, the University of Indonesia, Gadjah Mada University, and the Institute of Technology Sepuluh Nopember (ITS).
