Tin Alley Ventures

Tin Alley Ventures supports high-potential startups with a connection to the University to achieve global scale and impact through access to investment, industry expertise and global networks.

What is Tin Alley Ventures?

Tin Alley Ventures is the largest university-dedicated venture capital fund (A$125 million) in Australia, investing in exceptional University-affiliated startups, including startups founded by alumni.

Tin Alley Ventures primarily invests in biotech, hardware and software innovations that have the potential to deliver venture returns. It provides investment from A$500,000 to several millions of dollars from seed stage through to pre-Initial public offering (IPO) stage.

In addition to investment, Tin Alley Ventures provides a dedicated team and links into global networks to help scale innovative ideas and startups. The team includes Investment Managers with backgrounds in the life and physical sciences, as well as Founders-in-Residence – entrepreneurial and commercially-minded individuals who serve as trusted thought partners, coaches, and potential co-founders for researchers.

Why have we established Tin Alley Ventures?

The University of Melbourne is home to world-class research and ideas with potential to make a significant and positive impact on the wider world. However, this potential can become limited by critical capital and capability gaps at the point of commercialisation.

Tin Alley Ventures was established in 2023 as a joint venture between the University of Melbourne and leading investment firm, Tanarra Capital, to help overcome these challenges and propel the development of high potential ventures within the University of Melbourne ecosystem.

Tin Alley Ventures works closely with the University of Melbourne Genesis Pre-Seed Fund as a potential syndicate or follow-on investor.

Who can meet with Tin Alley Ventures and when?

Tin Alley Ventures is always open to meeting with University of Melbourne students, researchers or alumni curious about commercialising their discoveries via a startup pathway, or those already on that journey.
