Methods and Implementation Support for Clinical and Health Research

The Methods and Implementation Support for Clinical and Health Research (MISCH) platform supports all stages of health-related research. MISCH coordinates access to experts in biostatistics, clinical epidemiology, health economics, health informatics, and the design and implementation of clinical trials.

We bring together researchers from the University of Melbourne and the Parkville precinct to strengthen biomedical research and its translation. Our ultimate aim is to improve health care and reform health services.

As well as research support, we offer a program of courses and seminars. We also participate in departmental peer-review grant panels to develop and co-ordinate research ideas.

Resources

The MISCH platform offers support in five key areas:

  • Biostatistics and clinical epidemiology – study design, protocol development and analysis, with expertise in clinical trials (including adaptive designs and cluster trials) and observational studies
  • Health economics – all aspects of designing and implementing economic evaluations alongside health research and clinical trials
  • Health informatics – database development, support and training using Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) software
  • Implementation effectiveness and co-design – implementation study design, process evaluation within trials, and co-design expertise for intervention design, development and implementation
  • Clinical trial governance – navigating privacy and confidentiality policies, financial probity, legal and health regulatory matters, risk management and monitoring arrangements.

User information

Users can work with the MISCH platform in three ways:

  • Free grant development support – available when MISCH academics are listed as a chief investigator or associate investigator on the grant. The budgeted EFT covers work to be conducted if the grant is successful.
  • Subscription model – used for pilot projects, research development ideas, grant re-submissions and panel reviews.
  • Hub & spoke model – used for long-term biostatistical and health economics collaborations and when there is a need for ongoing support. This model means that biostatisticians and health economists can be embedded within your research team.
