BioSciences Microscopy Unit

Biological Imaging (the BioSciences Microscopy Unit (BMU)) helps life science researchers magnify and investigate the dynamics, structure and function of biological samples.

Biological Imaging (BMU) offers a range of imaging and preparation techniques for light, fluorescence, confocal and transmission and scanning electron microscopy. We work with academic and commercial researchers to help investigate different biological samples at organism, tissue, cell, organelle and molecular levels.

We can help with:

  • Scanning and transmission electron microscopy, including electron tomography
  • Live cell imaging with brightfield, fluorescence, laser confocal and spinning disk microscopy
  • Sample preparation techniques for light and electron microscopy fixation including embedding and staining
  • Cytological staining
  • Antibody labelling
  • Image analysis.

We work with researchers in academic and commercial sectors and offer training in specialised techniques. For example, we have helped image and track nanoparticles in cells for the development of new medical applications.
