An improved controller for battery energy storage systems has been developed by University of Melbourne researchers. It uses smart charging and discharging to manage the export of surplus energy from solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to the electricity network.
Current household battery systems for storing energy are ineffective at managing the export of surplus energy to the electricity grid. Exporting surplus solar energy from multiple households can cause power spikes, surges and congestion. This calls for expensive and time-consuming network upgrades. New methods for controlling battery energy storage systems are needed.
Proof of concept has been shown through simulation-based studies. They used data from real distribution networks and smart meters. The controller mitigated power spikes, surges and congestion while maintaining similar levels of energy self-sufficiency for customers.
A provisional patent application was filed on 21 November 2018.
