The Biomedical Engineering Innovation PhD Program is a multidisciplinary research training initiative that brings together Biomedical Engineering-themed PhD students, supervisors and alumni across the Melbourne Biomedical Precinct as well as industrial and clinical partners. The cross-faculty program provides PhD students from all faculties with a wider cohort experience, while facilitating mentoring and networking opportunities with potential employers or researchers from academic, clinical and industrial backgrounds. The Program is designed to provide exposure to diverse career paths and promote postdoctoral opportunities. If you have at least one supervisor from the University of Melbourne and your PhD research is in a relevant area, you are eligible to join.
The Program is facilitated by the Graeme Clark Institute and the Department of Biomedical Engineering at The University of Melbourne. It is committed to connecting PhD students with clinical and industrial partners to address clinical challenges with innovative research solutions, and aims to foster high impact translational research in the interdisciplinary field of Biomedical Engineering.
The Biomedical Engineering Innovation Program consists of a series of networking evenings, seminars, student presentations and skills development. PhD graduate researchers from all faculties are welcome to participate. Our events are held across different venues within the University of Melbourne, including the Department of Biomedical Engineering, St Vincent’s Hospital, The Royal Melbourne Hospital, The Bio21 Institute, The Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery, The Bionics Institute and others. Throughout the year, Program participants will be kept informed of upcoming events and opportunities.
- Industry nights: Evening social events allow Program participants to meet clinicians and industry professionals working in biomedical engineering fields. These networking events include short presentations from biomedical engineering PhD alumni, panel discussions on topics relevant to biomedical engineering PhDs, and “biomedical engineering speed-dating”, where real-world clinical problems are matched with innovative, biomedical engineering research solutions.
- Graduate Researcher presentations: Student events are held to encourage collaboration between PhD researchers from diverse faculties, and allow Program participants to present their results in an informal setting. Presenters are nominated for research awards, with prizes that include tickets to prestigious biomedical engineering events like the annual Graeme Clark Oration dinner.
- Seminars: PhD researchers in the Biomedical Engineering Innovation Program are invited to a range of seminars throughout the year that are focused on cutting edge topics in medical technology. Seminars are held by many organisations affiliated with biomedical engineering innovation, such as the Convergent Science Network. Program participants are also given the opportunity to attend networking functions before the official seminars.
