Stress shielding is the main biomechanical factor leading to aseptic loosening of the femoral stem following total hip arthroplasty (THA). This project aims to design a femoral stem incorporating novel auxetic structures to expand the femoral stem while in tensile loading, thus to increase the load transferred to the femur and avoid stress shielding induced bone resorption and aseptic loosening of the implant.
The objective of this project is:
The University of Melbourne: Professor Peter Vee Sin Lee
Shanghai Jiao Tong University: Professor Cheng-Kung Cheng
