We followed Dr. Vignolini’s public lecture, with our second innovation workshop, this time around the theme of bioInspired advanced materials.

The workshop was attended by Dr. Vignolini, representatives from government (Defence Science and Technology Group, Reserve Bank of Australia, Department of Primary Industry), industry (Arup, Umow Lai), researchers from the Melbourne School of Engineering, BioSciences, Microscopy, Chemistry, Physics, and the Melbourne School of Design, as well as collaborators from Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, and RMIT University.

The event was facilitated by Dr Greg Ward, Innovation Facilitator for the Australian Government Department of Industry, Innovation and Science.

Hearing from our speakers

The objective of the full-day workshop was to identify current and future key challenges in advanced materials and new, creative ways to address those challenges using a bioinspired approach.

Invitees from industry and researchers in physical sciences, biology, engineering and design provided brief, 5 minute, speed talks on either an aspect of their research that has commercial potential, or a challenge they face in optics or materials design that could benefit from a cross-disciplinary assembly of world-leading researchers.

The majority of the workshop comprised facilitated innovation sessions on key challenges identified by participants.
