Development of an incremental finite-element limit analysis technique for boundary value problems in sand

Finite-element limit analysis techniques, when used for capacity analysis on routine geotechnical problems, have proven to be versatile, robust and computationally cheaper as compared to corresponding elastoplastic finite element approaches. They are also easily programmable on any routine programming packages. However, their application is currently limited to problems undergoing small strains to failure.

This project aims to extend the modelling capabilities of the bound methods by developing an incremental finite-element limit analysis technique that caters for geometric and material non-linearity during large deformation. The approach will be validated using selected boundary value problems relevant to offshore geotechnics. The project will also explore the use of advanced constitutive models as an alternative to the traditional elastic-perfectly plastic model. The research is expected to improve flexibility, applicability and confidence in the use of bound theorems.
