PhD Completion Seminar - Luke Govers - Investigating the direct effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals on the development of the penis
My thesis aimed to understand how hormones and endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) affect the development of the penis, resulting in the condition hypospadias. Throughout my thesis I employed a novel in vitro culturing technique, which allowed us to observe the effects of hormones and EDCs directly on the development of the embryonic penis. The results of my thesis demonstrated that oestrogen and several oestrogenic EDCs induce hypospadias and affect a key subset of genes critical in penis development.
