The Materials Research Initiative forms part of the University's Hallmark Research Initiatives, which aim to enable the maturing of focused research communities that build on existing strengths across the University and beyond. The Initiatives have been established in selected priority areas which have significant potential to harness cross-University capabilities and open up targeted funding opportunities.

The Materials Research Initiative supports the materials community here at the University of Melbourne to strengthen partnerships and engagement with Industry (nationally and internationally) with the view to taking our research from the lab to 'real world' applications.

The Materials Research Initiative has an overarching vision to support collaboration across Science, Engineering and Medicine to develop research in scalable nano- to meso-materials initially across three selected Research themes:

  1. Materials into Medicine
  2. Materials for Energy
  3. Controlled Assembly of Materials
