MCFP machinery

We help drive leading materials research with advanced instrumentation, analysis and characterisation.

The Materials Characterisation and Fabrication Platform (MCFP) offers access to advanced technologies for measuring, analysing and understanding the structure and properties of materials.

We support a wide range of research fields – from chemical engineering and fabrication to biomedical engineering and pharmaceuticals development. As well as facilitating access to cutting-edge tech, we also provide expert advice and training.

Our services to industry include:

  • Materials characterisation
  • Particle characterisation
  • Surface chemistry
  • Phase identification
  • Microscopy and imaging

For example, we’ve worked with a water treatment and chemical distribution company to characterise residues from a water processing plant using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX). We’ve also worked with Defence Science and Technology Group to identify metal powders by XRD.

Resources

We offer access to technologies based on:

  • Scanning probe microscopy (Atomic force microscopy)
  • Advanced fluorescence imaging (confocal laser scanning microscopy, super-resolution microscopy)
  • Vibrational spectroscopy (Raman microspectroscopy, FTIR microscopy)
  • Scanning electron and helium ion microscopy
  • Elemental and phase characterisation (eg X-ray diffraction and fluorescence)
  • Cytometry (CyTOF high dimensional mass cytometry and Imaging flow cytometry).

For a full list of technologies available, please visit our website.

User information

All instrumentation on the MCFP platform is available for University of Melbourne researchers, external universities, institutes and research organisations, as well as our industry partners. We offer consultation and fee-for-service solutions to industry.

As well as offering state-of-the-art research capabilities, we also offer access to highly skilled scientists who can help you brainstorm solutions and run projects. We can conduct training so you can run our equipment and analyse the data.
