Overview

The University of Melbourne encourages eligible researchers to participate in and lead proposals to the National Institute of Health (NIH), the largest bio medical research agency in the world.

How to apply

  1. Communicate with International Grants Team, RIC and Program Director, NIH

    For higher chances of success, it is recommended that applicant conduct active discussions with the Program Director and the International Grants Team international-research@unimelb.edu.au as early as possible and where relevant, the Faculty Research Office.
  2. Sign up for eRA Commons login

    Lead CI must have an account prior to submission; other project team members (non-lead) are optional. Forward the lead CI’s Full Name and email address to international-research@unimelb.edu.au.
  3. Download package from Grants.gov and review documentation

    Search for the Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) number (generally in the format of ‘PAR-14-007’).
  4. Foreign Justification

    Consider what expertise your team has “unusual talent, resources or populations and/or environment conditions” that require the work to be done outside the USA. In the final application, attach this summary in a separate file called Foreign Justification.
  5. For applications with other organisations as the sub-awardees

    Forward the sub-award checklist (available below) to the relevant organisations. Alternatively, the International Grants Team can assist to liaise with the organisations at the request of the CI.
  6. Complete the draft application

    For assistance with the SF424 form; 1) see supporting documents , 2) email your query to international-research@unimelb.edu.au or, 3) refer to http://grants.nih.gov/grants/how-to-apply-application-guide.htm .
  7. Submit to Themis Grants Submission Workbench

    Submission requires Head of Department approval, which can be obtained through Themis.
  8. Review Ready

    Ten days prior to submission date, email completed SF424 form and supporting documents (attached to SF424 form) in Word format to international-research@unimelb.edu.au. The International Grants Team will anticipate to provide comments and suggestions within 5 working days.

    NB: Past experience has proven that organising supporting materials at the end of the grant writing process causes significant submission delays and impacts the quality of the application. It is recommended that applicant delegate tasks to the project team as early as possible.  Section IV of the Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) provides a checklist of required documents and content requirements. Section V provides Selection Criteria, which should be reviewed before completing the narrative/proposal.
  9. Submit by the Internal Deadline

    Submit to international-research@unimelb.edu.au at least 5 working days prior to the Grants.gov deadline (if review is required, at least 10 working days is required). The International Grants Team will attach all files to the SF424 form prior to submission (this avoids errors through Grants.gov). NB. Please be aware of version controls issues during submission for the internal deadline (many small emails may cause confusion on both sides). RIC cannot guarantee successful submission for late or incomplete applications.
