Overview

The University of Melbourne and the University of Manchester have established a research fund to deepen and extend collaborative research links between the universities. Grants will be awarded for collaborative research projects that may include, but are not limited to, symposia, workshops and researcher exchanges. Collaborations supported under this scheme should lead to external funding proposals that will support the next phase of research.

The fund is targeted to areas of overlapping/common interest between universities. At Manchester, the priority areas are the research beacons as well as education, cities, digital humanities, and arts and heritage.  At Melbourne, the focus is on the grand challenges, research institutes and hallmark research initiatives. Other areas of mutual interest from researchers will also be considered.

Grants will be awarded up to £5,000 from Manchester and AUD $10,000 from Melbourne. Each institution will funds its researchers' participation. Six awards will be granted this round, including two allocated to the Melbourne School of Engineering. Application is via a joint submission. A single application is prepared jointly by UoM and Manchester researchers and then submitted to each institution.

Eligibility for University of Melbourne applicants

  • Academic staff holding full-time or part-time employment at academic level A(6) or higher (minimum 0.5 FTE) from all disciplines are welcome to apply.
  • Honorary researchers can be named as non-lead participants but in doing so must demonstrate that they have capacity to fund their participation. Funds can only support expenses of UoM employees and graduate research students.
  • Graduate research students cannot lead applications but can be named on applications and participate in projects.
