Professor Liz Sonenberg is Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Collaboration) at the University of Melbourne, a part-time post she has held since August 2009. She is also Professor of Information Systems in the Melbourne School of Engineering, and has previously held positions as Dean of the Faculty of Science and Head of the Department of Information Systems in the Faculty of Science. Professor Sonenberg is a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and on the Board of Orygen Youth Health Research Centre Ltd and the Board of Melbourne Business School Ltd.

In her Pro Vice-Chancellor role, Liz Sonenberg supports the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and holds specific responsibilities for developing policy frameworks regarding the University's interdisciplinary research Institutes, and for planning of university-wide research infrastructure. Associated with these activities, she is involved with planning in the eResearch domain, including with the Melbourne eResearch Group (MEG), the Research Services unit within Information Technology Services (ITS-RS), the federally funded NeCTAR (National eResearch Collaboration Tools and Resources)  Project, the federally funded Australian Urban Research Infrastructure Network (AURIN) Project, and the state funded Victorian Life Sciences Computation Initiative (VLSCI).

Professor Sonenberg's research expertise is in computational science. The integrating theme of her research is the conceptualisation and construction of adaptive, distributed, intelligent information systems. Professor Sonenberg has considerable experience in facilitating and engaging in collaborative research, including links with various industry partners and research engagement with colleagues in Psychology, Computer Science, Education, and Medicine, and with colleagues internationally.
