Steering Committee

The Computational Biology Research Initiative (CBRI) Steering Committee helps to facilitate collaborative and interdisciplinary research by involving research staff from across University faculties, departments, and schools, and by facilitating connections and introductions with external researchers. It provides leadership and strategic advice regarding the development of CBRI research themes and projects. We have also appointed a PhD and postdoc rep to the committee to add diversity of experience and opinion.

Associate Professor Melanie Bahlo

Melanie Bahlo is co-Head of the Population Health and Immunity Division at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research.

David Balding is Professor of Statistical Genetics in the Schools of BioSciences and Mathematics & Statistics at the University of Melbourne, and Director of the Centre for Systems Genomics.

Professor Edmund Crampin, Computational Biology Research Initiative Chair

Edmund Crampin is the Rowden White Chair of Systems Biology at the University of Melbourne, Director of the Systems Biology Lab, Professor in the School of Mathematics and Statistics and the Melbourne School of Engineering, and Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.

Dr Melissa Davis

Melissa Davis is a National Breast Cancer Foundation Senior Research Fellow and Laboratory Head at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research.

Dr Zoe Dyson (postdoc rep)

Zoe Dyson is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow who joined the Holt laboratory in June 2015 at the Centre for Systems Genomics. Her current work is based around understanding the phylogeny and genomics of Salmonella Typhi, the main etiological agent of Typhoid fever. Prior to this she completed a PhD and honours at the Biotechnology Research Centre & La Trobe Institute of Molecular Sciences where she investigated the population dynamics and genomics of bacteriophages in activated sludge wastewater treatment systems. This work entailed significant portions of traditional microbiology, molecular biology, and bioinformatic analyses. She pursued these research qualifications following the completion of an undergraduate double degree; a Bachelor of Computing (Software Development/Web Development) and Applied Science (Biotechnology/Environmental Chemistry). In her final year of this course she was awarded the Australian Computing Society student award for achieving the highest average grade of an Information Technology undergraduate course at this campus, as well as the Australian Society for Microbiology third year prize for the same in Microbiology subjects.

Associate Professor Andrew Lonie

Michael Lydeamore (PhD rep)

Michael Lydeamore is currently in the second year of his PhD in the School of Mathematics and Statistics. His project is focussed on developing models for the control of Group A Streptococcus (GAS) in remote Indigenous communities. It is the eventual aim of this work to understand the role of household transmission, a question which is clearly linked to a sound understanding of the genomic data, as well as through other computational biology techniques. This PhD is part of a larger project which brings together researchers from the Menzies School of Health Research, Doherty Research Institute, Telethon Kids and the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute. Through this project, Michael collaborates with other modellers, demographers and clinicians.

Alicia Oshlack is a National Health Medical Research Council Career Development Fellow and Head of Bioinformatics at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute.

Associate Professor Tony Papenfuss

Tony Papenfuss is Head of Computational Biology at The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research and a Lab Head in the Bioinformatics Division. He holds a cross-institute appointment as Group Leader of the Bioinformatics and Cancer Genomics Lab at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
